How to renew (re-issue) your Indian passport

Renew an expired or expiring passport, or get a new one when pages run out, through the Passport Seva portal.

ಅಧಿಕೃತ ಮೂಲ: Passport Seva (Ministry of External Affairs)

ಕೊನೆಯದಾಗಿ ನವೀಕರಿಸಿದ್ದು:

In India, "renewing" a passport is officially called Re-issue of Passport. You apply for a re-issue when:

  • your passport has expired, or will expire soon
  • its pages are full
  • it is damaged, lost or stolen
  • you want to change your details (name, address, spouse's name and so on)

There are no screenshots on this page. The Passport Seva website does not allow its content to be copied without the Ministry of External Affairs' permission.

Documents you will need

Take the originals and one set of self-attested photocopies to the Passport Seva Kendra. This is the list the portal's Document Advisor gave on the date above for an adult, Normal (not Tatkaal) application, with a passport that has expired:

  • Your old passport, in original, with self-attested photocopies of:
    • its first two and last two pages
    • the ECR/Non-ECR page
    • the page of observation, if there is one
    • the validity extension page, if any
  • Proof of your present address: needed only if your address is different from the one in your old passport. The portal's "List of Acceptable Documents" shows what is accepted (for example Aadhaar, an electricity, water or phone bill, a rent agreement and others).

Other cases need other documents. The portal lists these:

  • Adding your spouse's name: marriage certificate, or a Joint Photo Declaration signed by husband and wife (Annexure J).
  • Removing your spouse's name: divorce order or decree.
  • Changing your spouse's name: divorce order/decree or death certificate of the first spouse, and re-marriage certificate or Annexure J.
  • Women changing surname after marriage or divorce: marriage certificate or Annexure J; for divorce, the divorce order or decree.
  • Lost or damaged passport: the portal provides a specimen affidavit (Annexure F).

Your case may be different: Tatkaal, minors, government employees and other situations add documents. Before you apply, run the Document Advisor for re-issue with your own answers. The portal also asks you to check your Regional Passport Office's page for any extra documents.

The fee

Fees were revised on 1 July 2026. Use the portal's Fee Calculator to see the current amount for your case. You pay online before you can book an appointment.

Steps

  1. Register on the Passport Seva portal: click Register, fill in your details and click Sign Up. Confirm your email address, then log in.
    • Your password expires every 3 months. Reset it when the portal asks.
    • You choose a Regional Passport Office (RPO) for where you live now. To re-issue from a different RPO than the one that issued your old passport, create a new login ID for that RPO. You can use the same email address.
  2. On your dashboard, click Services, then the Apply for Fresh Passport/Re-issue of Passport card. Choose re-issue.
    • If you have ever held an ordinary (dark blue) passport, choose re-issue, not fresh.
  3. Fill in the form. It has these steps: Passport Type, Applicant Details, Family Details, Address Details, Emergency Contact, Previous Passport, Other Details, Passport Preview, Details Verification.
    • You can save and come back later.
    • Check everything before you submit. You cannot change the application after submitting it.
  4. Submit. You get an Application Reference Number (ARN).
  5. Pay and book an appointment. Click View, then Pay and Schedule Appointment.
    • Choose the appointment quota (Normal or Tatkaal) and the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) you want.
    • Pay by credit or debit card, internet banking or UPI.
    • You can reschedule up to three times (Tatkaal: once).
  6. You get an SMS with your appointment details. A printed receipt is no longer required; the SMS is accepted as proof of your appointment.
  7. Visit the PSK on your appointment day with your original documents and their photocopies.

Good to know

  • Visit within 90 days. If you do not visit the PSK within 90 days of submitting the form online, you must submit a new application.
  • Only emergency or medical cases and pre-approved categories can visit without an appointment.
  • The Document Advisor's list is a guide only: the portal says the decision of the Passport Officer (APO/RPO) is final.
  • National Call Center: 1800-258-1800.
  • Use only passportindia.gov.in. Be careful with look-alike websites and agents who ask for extra money.
