How to update the address on your Aadhaar
What the online address update involves and what to do if it is not available to you.
ಅಧಿಕೃತ ಮೂಲ: UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India)
This is a general overview. UIDAI decides which documents are accepted and what any fee is, so confirm both on the official portal.
Before you start
- You usually need the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, because a one-time password (OTP) is sent to it.
- Keep one proof of address for your new address ready (see the list below).
Documents you will need
You upload one proof of address that shows your name and your address in India. The documents below are the ones UIDAI's official list (List IV, for updates) accepts as proof of address. The portal asks you to pick from this list.
Government-issued cards and certificates:
- Valid Indian passport
- Ration / PDS photograph card or e-Ration card
- Voter ID or e-Voter ID whose details are shown on the Election Commission of India website
- Service photo identity card issued by the Central or a State Government, a public sector undertaking, or a regulatory or statutory body
- Pensioner photo identity card, freedom fighter photo identity card, or pension payment order issued by such bodies
- Kisan photo passbook
- MGNREGA job card
- Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or Other Backward Class certificate issued by the Central or a State Government
Bank and financial documents:
- Passbook of a scheduled commercial bank or State cooperative bank, with your name and photograph, cross-stamped with the bank seal and signed by a bank official, or a Post Office savings account passbook with the post office's stamp and signature
- Bank account statement, credit card statement or Post Office savings account statement, with the bank or post office stamp and signature, not older than 3 months
Bills and property documents:
- Electricity bill (pre-paid or post-paid), water bill, telephone (landline, post-paid mobile or broadband) bill, or gas bill, each not older than 3 months
- Property tax receipt, not older than 1 year
- A valid sale agreement or gift deed registered with the Registrar's office, or a registered or unregistered rent, lease or leave-and-licence agreement
- Allotment letter of accommodation from the Central or a State Government, a public sector undertaking, or a regulatory or statutory body, not older than 1 year
- Life or medical insurance policy, valid up to one year from its date of issue
Certificates:
- A certificate on UIDAI's standard format signed by an MP, MLA, MLC or municipal councillor, a Gazetted Officer (Group A or B), a Tehsildar, or, in rural areas, a village panchayat head or equivalent authority
The full list has a few more entries, and UIDAI also lets you borrow the address of an immediate family member with a self-declaration from them. Check the official list for the conditions. If you have no document at all, UIDAI's update page explains the Address Validation Letter option.
Steps
- Open the official myAadhaar portal and log in with your Aadhaar number and the OTP.
- Choose the option to update your address.
- Enter the new address and upload the supporting document the portal asks for.
- Pay the fee if the portal shows one, then submit.
- Note the request number shown after submitting. You can use it to check the status on the portal.
If you cannot do it online
If your mobile number is not linked to your Aadhaar, the online process may not be available to you. In that case the official site explains how to visit an Aadhaar enrolment or update centre.
Good to know
- Do not share your OTP with anyone, including people who offer to "help" with the update.
- Use only the official portal. Look-alike sites exist.
